We live in America, and as believers, it's our responsibility to seek to live as obedient, peaceful, and loyal citizens. This requires us to abide by the laws and the spirit of democracy. We honor its privileges by interceding with God for those who administer them.
Many Christians have joined factions that advance specific causes in recent decades. The abortion rights movement is a perfect example. Though noble, it has focused on humankind rather than on Jesus and the message of salvation. Other causes are supported as the fear of an assault on religious freedom grows.
The American church has stepped beyond many worthy causes into the political arena. We have sinned by adhering to the particular banners under which the ruling party, mainly the Republicans, has flown. Consequently, many who have supported this president and his policies now feel disposed to vindicate or excuse his actions, many of which are inconsistent with Christian values. The apostle Paul set the example for us to follow in these matters. He was always obedient to the government he was subject to, but never advocated for it. Notice that when addressing himself to a governor, he did not fail to reason about righteousness and judgment. It is our duty as Christians to refrain from applauding everything that President Trump is doing, especially when it is contrary to our actual values, lest we become partakers of his sins and contribute to their repetition.
Yes, we live in a democracy. It is our responsibility to act in ways that reflect Christian values, but even so, we should not eagerly enter into disputes that lead to strife. We are of another kingdom, pilgrims passing through, with heaven our home. Let worldly men who thirst for promotion to a position or office have their reward, but we, as Christians, should distance ourselves from the present tumultuous times.
In both the 2016 and 2024 presidential elections, Evangelicals were unwilling to wait for God's time. He desired to bring further judgment through the president of His choice. So, God accommodated and adjusted His dealings to man's devices so that the church might see the evil outcome of their desires. In compliance with Evangelicals' wishes, God gave Donald Trump someone who would take their side on the issues they care most about. At the beginning of this presidency, we saw humility, modesty, and success; his true character was revealed as he became more comfortable in his role as commander-in-chief. He was quickly puffed up by his so-called royal dignity, vain glory, self-confidence, and hypocrisy.
While many evangelicals, burning with biblical zeal, push forward to protect God-given freedoms, they have been blinded by the president's criminality. Their preconceived opinions have disregarded the hand of God in this whole situation. The prophets have sadly been slow to sound the alarm, while pastors and leaders are quick to sing the president's praises. These leaders have been swayed by their political attachments; instead of lamenting, they have become carnal.
We live in a time of fluctuating, unsettled people, controlled by a president who leads us down paths where few are willing to look for the old ways. Everyone is doing what is right in his own eyes. Is it possible that we are living in a period comparable to the Judges in the Old Testament?
